Why Ductwork Can Make or Break a New System

It's tempting to think of an HVAC upgrade as swapping one box for a better box. But the ductwork that distributes the air is just as important as the equipment itself — and it's often ignored in quotes.

Why ducts get overlooked

Replacing equipment is straightforward and visible. Inspecting and correcting ductwork is more work, so a contractor chasing the lowest bid may simply reconnect the new system to the old ducts and hope for the best.

What can go wrong

• Undersized ducts choke airflow, so even a properly sized system can't deliver its rated performance.
• Leaky ducts lose conditioned air into attics and crawlspaces — you pay to heat and cool space you don't live in.
• Poor design leaves some rooms hot and others cold: the classic “upstairs is always warm” complaint.

What a thorough contractor does

• Measures static pressure to see how hard the system is working against the ducts.
• Inspects for leaks, undersized runs, and poor returns.
• Recommends sealing or modifications when needed — not just a new box.
